Public Inquiry Into Torturegate Canada: Sign The Online Petition

Via Thwap's place:
Pursuant to the goal of bringing accountability and the rule of law to Canada, and starting the process of getting the harpercons into the prison cells they're inevitably going to be thrown into, Alison at Creekside has a link to an online petition for a public inquiry into torture.

Please sign it and send it.
I did. How about the rest of you, fellow Canadians?

And to this effect: read this call for action from Thwap. You won't regret it.

9 POVs/Comments:

  1. I really wish people who are truly passionate about a cause would stop resorting to online petitions. They are completely pointless and not recognized or accepted by any legislature in this country. If you want a petition to be noticed by Ottawa, it has to be the old fasioned paper petition with real signatures on it.

  2. Siobha: actually, this one is sponsored by the NDP and after signing an email from Jack Layton's office is sent to you.

So, this involves directly one of the opposition parties in the House of Commons ...

  3. P.S. You also have to give your name and full home address on this petition - like "real petitions".

  4. Actually, Mentarch, the petition is from Ceasefire - it's just that so far the NDP are the only party sending a response.

Many thanks for picking this up.

  5. Let's think about this.

If there is a public inquiry, it gives the Cons the slimmest chance of looking like they took the high road. After that, they'll push their PR into full gear and many Canadians will be duped into believing that all public servants can't be trusted (again: a fabrication from the Cons; I think public servants deserve better).

If there isn't an inquiry, the opposition should find a way to make the House fall and then make it a central election issue. This is their one chance to push the Cons into defensive mode under a public spotlight.

  6. Ceasefire, aye. But since I got an email reply from Layton's office ...

Well, thanks for the prcision, Alison.

And no problem - it's the least I could do.

  7. Anon: I don't see how the Cons could end up looking like they took the high road ... especially considering their past behavior (and more to come when I publish Part III of this series) in ths matter ...

  8. as much as I'd like to see the House fall, I won't do what the parties are doing - use this to some other advantage. All Canadians opposed to torture should make themselves heard - petitions, letters, just demanding an inquiry and demanding transparency and an end to the cover up and transfer until we are sure the conventions are being respected.

    I'll post the petition.
