Climate Change - Shlimate Change!

Here's the thanks we get from nature for us doing nothing about climate change (emphasis added):

Oceans rising faster than expected as climate change exceeds grimmest models

Since the 1997 international accord to fight global warming, climate change has worsened and accelerated — beyond some of the grimmest of warnings made back then.

As the world has talked for a dozen years about what to do next, new ship passages opened through the once frozen summer sea ice of the Arctic. In Greenland and Antarctica, ice sheets have lost trillions of tons of ice. Mountain glaciers in Europe, South America, Asia and Africa are shrinking faster than before.

And it's not just the frozen parts of the world that have felt the heat in the dozen years leading up to next month's climate summit in Copenhagen:

The world's oceans have risen by about an inch and a half.
No surprise there.

Maybe we need to fudge further the science of climate change in order to finally manage to shape the reality that we want?

I suppose we'll finally accept the fact that we should've done done something about this catastrophe once we'll be several feet under water ...

  2. Why would I when a demonstrated science-iliterate thinks himself smart by telling me, a bona fides scientist (cell biologist), that I'm the one who needs to "study more"?

All he has done is move the goalposts and throw back stupid, ignorance-based arguments - just like typical creationists/IDists.

And all he has to offer in the end is Deepak Chopra?

Let him wallow in his pretentious ignorance, then.

I've wasted enough of my time with him.

  3. The current buzz is that Obama may travel to Copenhagen to offer a deal that, in reality, may be worse than no deal at all. The NYT quotes a White House official suggesting it'll be in line with Congressional legislation - 17-20% reductions from 2002 levels by 2020. The idea is that Obama won't put forward a "target" that Congress won't endorse.

On most issues this approach would be acceptable, even expected. The art of compromise and all that. The approach breaks down, however, when realities such as tipping points come into play. Once the earth's feedback mechanisms kick in releasing carbon dioxide and, worse, methane now held in the tundra and sea beds we'll be in a situation totally beyond our control.

Angela Merkel's scientific advisory body wants 80% reduction from 1990 levels by 2050, effectively decarbonizing our economies and societies. They appear to view the sort of numbers the Americans are proposing as utterly disastrous.

If we lull ourselves into contentment with half measures we can expect a very predictable result. When we speak in terms of targets and nominal reductions we act as though we're not confronted with a straightforward yes/no problem. Maybe isn't an option no matter how strong our inclinations to go that way.

  4. nevermind. letardo's sanitizing his blog.

  5. KEvron: really??? What a douchebaggy thing to do. Sounds awfully familiar - i.e. like what far rightwingnutz usually do.

LeDaro - "progressive blogger" ... indeed.

    Yup. Indeed. Absolutely.

  7. KEvron: just in case LeDaro decides to sanitize his comment section more, I'm reproducing his last reply to me and my own:

LeDaro: "Mentarch, not at all. I am dead serious. An “expression” and a “response” do imply intelligence. If you read medical journals they do talk about intelligence of the human cells."

My response: "That's pure invention on your part, LeDaro.

How about actually *reading* a scientific journal?

    (sheesh!)
    "

And *I* should know - considering that reading published scientific papers is a daily must for my profession ... you know, being a scientist and all ...

    (sigh)

  8. MoS: by the way - watch out my next post which will be coming around 7 PM (thanks to the blogspot scheduling feature) ...

  9. How predictable - now LeDaro has decided to go all "Lie and Cry" on me. To whit:

Ledaro: Mentarch, I was generally very respectful of you until I saw a comment on your blog about me. That was very cowardly of you to make denigrating remarks about me without my knowledge.

I actually visited your blog to thank you for your contributions here but I was shocked by your comments. You may be a self-proclaimed scientist and a professor but after reading your comments I reached the conclusion that you're an utterly ignorant man and why a university will hire you beats me.

I was thinking of a writer NELS QUEVLI who I understand wrote extensively on cell intelligence. And I saw an article somewhere on him in a medical journal while ago. But it does not matter anyway I am utterly disappointed by your arrogance and ignorance.

You know so little about me and yet made some very unfortunate disparaging remarks. I may have read more then you can imagine or probably you will ever do but that is beside the point. I do not go around denigrating people.

Oh yes - quite respectful of me by telling me, an actual scientist, to essentially "go back to school" - all the while regurgitating the quackery of Deepak Chopra or Nels Quelvy! Indeed.

Say LeDaro - are you going to argue the validity of the "100 monkeys" hoax too?

And of course, I'm the one who is arrogant, ignorant, incompetent, and blahblahblah.

    How typical.

Well, here's my response (I don't know if he'll "sanitize" or not): I wrote nothing that I did not write here.

    Enjoy continuing ignoring reality.

I find it amazing that LeDaro ignorance-based arguments are the same as any typical creationist/IDist - you know, like Sarah Palin, maybe?

And then he sanitizes the comments section of his blog post (at one point there was some 40+ comments!) - you know, like typical rightwingnuts, maybe?

And then he becomes all flustered and insulted because he is called out for what he is - you know, like Sarah Palin, maybe?

LeDaro - progressive blogger? Let the question hang ...

And that, as they say, is that.

    ReplyDelete
  10. LOL - now LeDaro has deleted my last response to his snivelling drivel:

LeDaro: I rarely delete comments but there is no place for idiots like you here. You stick to your own delusional stuff and have tea-bagging party with your ape-grandfather.

Any further nonsense from you will be deleted.

Yes - I speak nonesense. But here's the clincher with a follow-up comment of his:

LeDaro:I feel sorry for those you teach.

This must remain documented, since LeDaro has now demonstrated a tendency to go "rightwingnutz" by sanitizing and deleting comments he doesn't like - while restoring a few of them (such as some from KEvron), all in order to make himself shine in a brighter light.

    How typical ... and pathetic.

You know, folks - such pretentious ignorance and hypocritical delusion is fully at par with the likes of Sarah Palin.

I am sorely tempted to actually write a blogpost about it but ... I will hold off for now.

Besides - I find it utterly ludicrous that LeDaro and his ilk would have the unmitigated gall to question my competence as a scientist and university professor, even going as far as calling me an idiot who srpouts nonesense, when:

    - he has not published regularly in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as I have;

    - he has not been regularly funded by agencies like the CIHR, Cancer Research Society, Canadian FOundation for Innovation, et al., as I have;

    - hell, he doesn't even do scientific research, let alone understand anything about science, scientific theories and the scientific method.

Then again - the same thing goes for Deepak Chopra and Nels Quelvy, those from which our ignorant LeDaro borrows profusely, eh?

Ah, the limits of ignorance - eh, LeDaro?

Give hugs and kisses to your creationist/IDists primitive-minded friends, you laughable chump.

(or should I say "chimp"?) ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Incredible - LeDaro removed yet more comments (at one point the number stood at 40+, then dropped to 28, then back up to 34 and as of now to 31). Good thing I'd save them in a .doc file for "a rainy day" after his first sanitization ...

If anyone is interested in seeing more of LeDaro's further implosion as he reveals what he truly is, go on over here at CC's and read the comment section.

    ;-)

  12. so Mentarch, where are these racist comments LeDaro claims you made?

    ReplyDelete
  13. 900ftJ: beats me! This guy is undergoing a complete meltdown and seriously needs counseling.

Either that or he's fully demonstrating that he's nothing but a rightwingnutz at heart, the way he wallows in ad hominem attacks on me, after failing to bait me with his continual "move the goalpost" tactics.

I know stuff and I have the credentials to back it up - ergo I'm "arrogant, self-conceited and ego-bloated" ...

(and oh yeah - a racist at that!!!)

Typical argument from your typical intellectual sloth-driven, pretentious ignoramus.

    (/shrug)

    ReplyDelete
  14. P.S. I especially liked this part of his nonsensical response to you at his "blog": "If someone sits in a lab and plays with mice does not mean that we should all bow to him/her or if someone calls himself/herself academic/intellectual that we should go on our knees."

I wonder why this sounds so familiar ... ah yes! Another creationist ignoramus essentially used the same argument - which I destroyed back there already.

LeDaro - same thing as any other intellectual sloth-driven creationist/IDist ignoramus.

For which I called him out on it already at his "blog".

    Thus I add: Q.E.D.

(and thanks for coming to my defense 900ftJ - but really, what's the point with unstable, deluded folks like LeDaro? Reason is a lacking faculty in such primitive minds - sadly and unfortunately enough)

    ReplyDelete
  15. you don't need anyone to defend you, I know that, but really! I can't be Zen-like all the effing time!

But we may owe LeadArrow an apology. Apparently there is incontrovertible evidence that cells are in fact intelligent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HchNlZuOpcs

You’re the science guy, you decide.

(900 meekly bows as she leaves the room, careful not to tread on the mice)

  16. ROFLOL!!!

Yup - I am now stumped indeed! Why, I gues I will have to return back to school after all! ;-)

    (Awesome find, 900ftJ!)

    ReplyDelete
  17. 900ftJ: and by the way - the childish ignoramus is right back at it - not only is it pure drivel, he (she?) actually takes a side-swipe at yours truly.

Even more funny - MoS takes him to task for his (her?) drivel and all the adolescent can reply is nothing more than further drivel and his (her?) continued screed against me.

He/she just keeps on making an utter fool of himself - a shame, really, that he/she doesn't realize it.

In any case, his/her petty opinion of me is completely irrelevant and inconsequential.

But you know what is disturbing here? The fact that both of his/her intellectual sloth-driven ignorant creationist/IDist pieces on evolution (never mind the facile excuse that the second one was wtitten with humor in mind) actually made it to the front page of Prog Bloggers ...

    O.o
