long way to go. I don't think we can ever really get there. We've written about this before, how even if you manage to teach every person alive to be compassionate, caring, not ignorant, you have to teach every generation that follows and make sure some sociopath doesn't get the edge, and weak or greedy people don't follow.
ReplyDeleteWe don't inherit wisdom, insight, knowledge, decency, caring.
Someone asked me yesterday what the first thing I would do is if I suddenly had the power the christian god is supposed to have. I said I'd change our genetics immediately, in everyone. Remove the genes that make us fear what's different, the ones that make us want more, the ones that make us cruel.
He said he'd rather teach people to be decent. I used to feel that way, but as you teach, horrors keep happening, and it would be an endless exercise of teaching as well since it isnt just what we learn that makes us act so horribly, but those genetic drives we pretend don't rule us to a large degree.
If I had god power, how could I allow a single child to be tortured, raped, murdered?
Hell, I'm not a christian!
Heh ;-)
ReplyDeleteMe, I remain a bit more optimistic because there is a potential, valid solution to this ...
yes, education. If the majority is well educated, the rest can be managed. Thanks for the reminder. A really terrific Zen master I met briefly told me (after I asked her how she can keep such hope despite all the horror) - "you touch the things you can." I knew what she meant - do what you can, encourage others to do the same, it spreads, it'll never be perfect, but it will be better.
