Harperism And Integrity
So - it looks like elections will be officially announced this coming Sunday, with October 14 being the likely date.
My thoughts and questions on Prime Minister Stephen Harper's maneuverings (i.e. meeting with leaders of opposition parties in order to ask them if they are willing to give him nothing less than a blank check) and subsequent justifications (i.e. opposition leaders of course refuse, therefore the House of Commons will be "dysfunctional") to send us to elections, especially in light of the Canada Elections Act (fixed dates for elections) which he pushed to make as law, essentially go along the lines of those of Canadian Cynic (who simply beat me to it!).
Typical dissembling on Harper's part aside, I wish to address those CPC "partisan adds" that have been running everywhere over the last few days.
This is what they say:
Now - it is fact that "partisan adds" are legal. However, considering that such adds are clearly electoral in form, tone and style, it is obvious to yours truly that Harper and the CPC have begun to run their election campaign ahead of any official announcement that there will be indeed elections.
In other words: here they are again trying to exploit a perceived loophole in the election laws ("In-and-Out" scam, anyone?).
Here's the rub: what does it say about someone's honesty, integrity and sense of fair play when one always attempts to exploit loopholes?
Exploiting loopholes is seeking to cheat legally - in other words: it is cheating and getting away with it.
All the while conveniently forgetting that just because something is not illegal or forbidden or disallowed, that it means that said something is inherently honest, upright, moral or straight-up.
Only incompetents (as per the Second Principle of Incompetence) exploit loopholes whenever they can, thus allowing them to cheat the game while claiming a (false, deluded) moral and ethical high ground ("Hey - we did nothing technically wrong here!").
So in essence, what we have here is another example of de facto utter lack of sense of fair play, of integrity, of honesty - of honor.
But what we do have here is hypocrisy.
And what we do have here is Harper and the CPC.
Harperism par excellence indeed.
Any questions?

The election-style ads, in both English and French, feature Canadians who offer a positive assessment of Harper. At the end of the English version one, a young woman proudly claims that she's a first-time voter and that she will vote for Harper. Words like "honesty" and "integrity" are also thrown around these adds (having seen them myself).
"Stephen Harper's the kind of person who knows where he stands. He's a straight-up guy," one man says in the advertisement.

"Stephen Harper's the kind of person who knows where he stands. He's a straight-up guy,"
ReplyDeleteHmm, sounds suspiciously like what supporters of George Bush say. Oh, and that they'd like to have a beer with him.
But while Bush certainly looks like a beer swiller, Harper can only dream of being thought of in that everyman vein.
Harper is the worst kind of elitist - a neoconservative one.
ReplyDeleteHello. Very impressive article. I included it on my blog- mycornerofthesandbox.blogspot.com. I'm amazed at your research and am curious what programs you use to combine all your references within the articles. I'm fairly recent to blogging and feeling my way. Any feedback would be appreciated. I check out your site daily and basically share the views expressed here. What a depressing prospect to have Harper back in. And we used to think our politics were a little more enlightened than down south. Looks like the laugh might be on us.
ReplyDeleteHey Alan - thanks for the praises - much appreciated ;-)
ReplyDeleteYeah - I am really not happy about how things are looking up in our country as well. Again: I lay the blame first and foremost on all of us ("mea culpa, mea culpa vox populi" as I am fond of saying). However, it doesn't help when the LPC and NDP are running unfocused, as well as seemingly ill-planned, ill-prepared, campaigns ...
With regards to blogging - all I do is try to keep up to date with the news as best as I can while fighting the "short attention span" and "memory retention span" syndromes that 24 hrs news cycles sort of encourage in us. That, and lots of time spent Googling and bookmarking ... the idea being that before claiming that someone said this or that, or did this or that, it must be backed up by verifiable sources.
And nice blog you got going there - I put it up in my "more suspicious links" sidebar. Cheers ;-)

ReplyDeleteHmmm.... so do you feel the same when the Liberals exploit a loophole?

Anon: your dubious link notwithstanding - if you'd taken the time to peruse this blog, you would've already had your answer.
