Item 1: But first, here is an important message from Operation Enduring Propaganda:We at Operation Enduring Propaganda HQ would like to convey our deepest appreciation to all you truly patriotic Americans out there, for heeding our warnings concerning the islamofascist threat that we are faced with, as well as for picking up our calls to attack Iran pre-emptively. We are proud to report that there is now a majority (52%) of our fellow Americans who agree with us that Iran must be dealt with. Our message has been indeed getting through, as a majority (53%) of our fellow Americans have come to expect such a war with Iran. Even more rewarding, for all our efforts here at Operation Enduring Propaganda HQ, is the fact that an even greater majority (68%) of Americans agree that another terrorist attack is likely to occur on U.S. soil. We say to you truly patriotic Americans: thank you - thank you for listening to us, thank you for accepting our word that we are faced with the greatest threat ever in the history of our good and great country, and that the next step to deal with this threat is to bomb Iran. You trusted us with regards to Afghanistan and Iraq, and you still trust us now with regards to Iran. You obviously understand and agree with our Greatest President Ever that we are at war, and those who disagree with this are naïve or treacherous disingenuous. Know that we will continue to work hard to keep all of you aware of this most terrible threat to our way of life that is islamofascism (and keep not minding those foolish folks who claim that there is no such a thing - they are Fifth columnists, obviously).
Speaking of which: the Muslims are coming! the Muslims are coming! The Muslims are coming! The Muslims are coming! The Muslims are coming! The Muslims are coming!
Stand tall and vigilant, America - we must remain afraid, but we will prevail.
And thank you again for making our job that much easier.
(Now that this is out of the way, let us proceed as usual ...)
Item 2: Bomb, bomb, bomb ... bomb, bomb Iran! This past week, those eager drummers of the Iran war drums really went at it. According to them,
those who do not want to bomb Iran are like Hitler appeasers of old. That's right: Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
is like the Stalins, Maos and Hitlers of history. Hence, not wanting to bomb Iran
is dangerous complacency - as that displayed prior to WWII with regards to Hitler. To this effect, U.S. Presidential candidates and their advisers continue to elbow each other in their continuing game of "
who's tougher against Iran?" - with the
eager approval of the usual warmongers and propagandists, compelling them to boldly proclaim that
anyone not threatening at least a devastating military strike against Iran will prove to be terribly weak against terrorism (you know, like
this "clearly unfit-for-presidency weakling", or
this one as well). Then again - none of the current candidates can match President Bush on hawkish anti-Iran rhetoric, as he proved
yet again this week.
Yes, indeedy - the
selling of the Iran war is in earnest and, as illustrated in
Item 1 above, the dividends are paying off - unfortunately, as I
expected on
all accounts so far, especially with regards to the metastasizing
cancer on the body democratic and the
fear that
still drives America (and in contrast to
others who thought that the American public would not fall for such transparently obvious nonsense again).
(Remember what was said in the run-up to the Iraq war? No need to search your memory: simply read what keeps on being said in support for an Iran war. Same. Damn. Things. Simply replace "Iran" with "Iraq", and
voilà!)
Let it be known:
the war on terror is now war on Iran.
(I can hear those nefarious folks at Op. Enduring Prop. HQ celebrating still ...)
Which brings me to the next item ...
Item 3: Just keep on making that (bogus) case for an Iran War!As analysts
drone on about how the latest U.S. sanctions on Iran increase pressure on European allies to follow suit and "tighten the screws" on the Islamic state or see it attacked, the Bush administration continues its game of misdirection by
playing coy with regards to being on the warpath with Iran (Yes -
just like they did back in 2002 concerning Iraq).
This ploy is proving (again) so effective, some keep wondering (
hopefully?) whether the U.S. will attack Iran or not, while others have come to view any asinine
sign to support the misdirecting meme that "
Bush wants to prevent war, not start it". However, there are still those (like
yours truly) who
are not so easily fooled.
But wait: it did come to light already that the Bush administration was all about finding the link between 9/11 and Iraq - remember? Well, it has now likewise come to light that this very same administration has also been about
finding a link between the Iraq insurgency and Iran (
doh!). In fact, this intent was a
de facto modus operandi almost a year before the U.S. began to make claims that Iran is fostering the Iraq insurgency.
(Still not sure of this? Then I invite you to read previous installments of
Iran Watch here,
here,
here,
here,
here,
here and
here)
Yet once again, the
Seventh Principle of Incompetence is proven true (I know - I am
repeating myself here ... what can I say?)
Interestingly,
N.I.E.'s will no longer be declassified unless there is a serious national emergency. This is quite convenient, considering the already mounting evidence of
exaggerations in previous N.I.E.'s concerning Iran, as well as it has become quite obvious that the Bush administration (and the supporting politicized military) are being less than forthright (or
truthful) with regards to any tangible proofs of their accusations that Iran is
fostering terrorism, the proliferation of WMD's, and all other assorted evils
du jour.
Heck - what if subsequent N.I.E.'s actually say that Iran is innocent of all charges? Now, that would be quite inconvenient if such troublesome N.I.E.'s were declassified to inform the (already enthralled - see again
Item 1 above) public, no? Why, the public would actually start asking questions, such as "
how can Iran smuggle weapons across the Iraq border without ever being seen?", or "
why exactly is there a drop in the use of alleged Iranian-made armor piercing explosives in Iraq?", and other such very
à propos questions.
Again: how
convenient ...
In the meantime, word is coming out that an American attack on Iran
will be viewed by Moscow as an attack on Russia. No formal response yet
from Washington - but interestingly, Russia's
accusation that the U.S. is accelerating attempts to deploy anti-missile defences in central Europe
did elicit a response ... maybe because the U.S. conducted a
successful missile defense test in between (to know more about this linkage between a (bogus) Iranian missile threat to Europe and missile shield defense, read
this).
On a
completely unrelated note: Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
felt obligated this week to emphasize that millions of Iranians would be ready to sacrifice themselves fighting the country's enemies (you know - like if the U.S. invades) ...
Food for thought, eh?
Item 4: The hypocrisy and mendacity ... they burns! As Iran and the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency
resumed talks over Iranian nuclear activities, the Bush administration made the charge (yet again) that there is no doubt that Iran is seeking to make nuclear weapons.
This prompted the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency chairman to state (yet again) that he has no evidence that Iran is building nuclear weapons, furthermore accusing the Bush administration of
adding "fuel to the fire" with its recent hawkish anti-Iran rhetoric. Not convinced? Then chew over these two tidbits of trivia:
A) Pakistan has the bomb?
No problemo.
B) Egypt
wants to build nuclear plants (you know -
like Iran wants to)?
No problemo.
Such obvious hypocrisy on the part of the U.S. is further emphasized by the
recent statement by Saudi Arabia's foreign minister that Persian Gulf Arab states are willing to set up a regulatory body to provide enriched uranium to Iran in order to defuse Teheran's stand-off with the West over its nuclear energy-producing plans.
(And speaking of hypocrisy: Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah
accused Britain of not doing enough to fight international terrorism ... yeah,
ri-ight)
Meanwhile, thirty U.S. senators
signed a letter sent to President Bush in order to remind him that he has no authority to launch a military action against Iran. Some even gathered up the courage to
denounce the Bush administration’s Iran nuclear fearmongering and saber-rattling, as well as its
confrontational "diplomatic" endeavors
vis à vis Iran.
Incidentally, the White House announced that President Bush is now planning to implement as much new policy "as he can" by
governing through administrative orders.
You do the math ...
(I wonder
who exactly pushed this quaint idea first?)
And that concludes this week's
Iran Watch.
As usual, I sincerely hope that there will be nothing for me to report in next week's installment ...
